GCL 2026 Day 6: Carlsen Defeats Anand Amidst a Massive Three-Way Tie

It's been six days since the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2026 started, and after all teams have played 8 games, it's still unclear who will play in the finals and the 3rd-place match. After the matches, Alpine APL Pipers, FYERS American Gambits, and Ganges Grandmasters are on 15 Match points. CheQ Mumba Masters are in 4th place with 12 match points. Close fight at the top

On the 6th day, Alpine APL Pipers suffered a tough loss against Ganges Grandmasters, where Levon defeated Anish Giri, and Stavroula won against Koneru Humpy. In another important clash, American Gambits defeated Ganges Grandmasters to keep them neck and neck at the top. Triveni suffered a loss against Mumba Masters, which takes them out of the race.

Match 21: Alpine APL Pipers vs. Ganges Grandmasters (4-12)

It was an important clash that came in favour of Ganges Grandmasters. Levon scored an important win over Anish Giri, and Stavroula Tsolakidou defeated Koneru Humpy to score 8 points with the black pieces for their team.

Match 22: Triveni Continental Kings vs. CheQ Mumba Masters (5-14)

Season 4 of Global Chess League is not going in the favour of Triveni Continental Kings, as they suffered another loss. CheQ Mumba Masters scored an impressive win over Triveni, where MVL defeated Alireza on the Icon board, and Mamedyarov and Daneshvar also scored wins with black pieces.

Alpine APL Pipers came back stronger after losing their 1st game of the day. Magnus Carlsen defeated Viswanathan Anand on the icon board. Kooneru Humpy defeated Nino Batsiashvili, and on the prodigy board, Volodar Murzin won against Abhimanyu Mishra.

  • 6 Franchises, Double Round-Robin: Top teams battle through league play to determine the finalists.

  • Synchronized 6-Board Matches: 1 Icon, 2 Superstar Men, 2 Superstar Women, and 1 Prodigy per squad.

  • Unified Colors: A coin toss decides which squad plays all-White or all-Black boards.

  • Dynamic Points: Win with Black = 4 pts, Win with White = 3 pts, Draw = 1 pt.

  • Time Control: Rapid 20 minutes per player, with a 2-second increment added only from Move 41.
